Silver Spring: It’s Penguin Fever and You’re Going to Like It

Posted in history, musings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 10:43 am by silversprung

It’s been impossible for me to ignore the ubiquitous penguins of Silver Spring. We turned a corner the other day at Cedar and Ellsworth, and there, plopped in the middle of the median, stood a waxy, penguin-like statue, its head cocked to the side, giving us the eye.

“What the heck?”

They’re hanging out at the metro, too. The uber-confusing “Transit Info” signs posted around the giant construction zone that is the current Silver Spring Metro are adorned with fat, little cartoon penguins donning construction hats. (See image left. Yeah, that fat little bugger.)

This isn’t the arctic, it’s Maryland. Read the rest of this entry »

Dear Mattress Warehouse: Stop Jerking Us Around!

Posted in musings, open letters tagged , , at 10:23 am by silversprung

Yeah, we’re happy you carry split box springs and all, Mattress Warehouse, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that you have failed to deliver our guest bed not once, but twice.

This past Saturday, when we received our early morning “the delivery guy is coming between the hours of such-and-such and such-and-such” call, the conversation didn’t go as planned.

“We are calling to inform you that we don’t have any split boxsprings.”

“What do you mean? You don’t have any? We just received one last weekend. Do you mean to tell us we ordered and received the very last split boxspring out of all of Mattress Warehouse’s warehouses last weekend? Why did you wait until this morning to tell us? Why not last weekend when we rescheduled?”

“I’m sorry. We don’t have any available. We’ll give you a call when we get them in.” Read the rest of this entry »

First Night Out in The Spring

Posted in food restaurants, silver spring businesses tagged , , , , , , , , at 10:31 am by silversprung

This past weekend, we experienced something new. For the first time since our move, we had the time, the energy, and (most unusually) the very real desire to leave our new house for a break. So we ventured out for a quick dinner in downtown Silver Spring.

Silversprung spouse and I decided that we wanted Indian food, and since we still don’t yet have regular Internet or a phone book, we drove downtown in the hopes that we would spot some type of Indian cuisine. We came across Planet Bollywood, so we checked out the menu. SSspouse peered through the tinted glass to make certain people were eating there (my litmus test- I will never be the first table seated if we’re trying somewhere new) and we took a chance on it. Anniversary Dinner in Silver Spring?

Posted in food restaurants, recommendations, silver spring businesses tagged , , at 3:18 pm by silversprung

I’m counting on your help, sprungers! Silversprung spouse and I have an anniversary coming up. We had our hearts set on a place in D.C., but it’s been booked up for months and so far they haven’t had any cancellations.

What restaurants would you recommend in Silver Spring for an anniversary dinner? From cheap to chic and in-between. I want to hear it all!

Discuss.

Drink of the Day: 1

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , at 10:08 am by silversprung

After a hell of a day yesterday, I have decided to implement a new series on Sprung on the Spring called “Drink of the Day.”

Below is the first installment. Enjoy!

Cucumber Gin and Tonic

Don’t get grossed out by the cucumber just yet… First, picture a really warm day. D.C. humidity is ridiculously high. You’ve just nearly walked through water to get home, the air is so thick. You plunk down your work bag, grab a glass and some ice. Now… the Cucumber G&T.

MoCo Lags Behind Surrounding Counties in Census Participation

Posted in news, online tools tagged , , , , , , , , , at 4:07 pm by silversprung

Just 25 percent of Montgomery County residents have participated in the U.S. Census, placing MoCo’s participation rate behind that of many neighboring counties in Maryland, according to the census website’s Take 10 Map.

Rates for surrounding counties include: Frederick (29 percent); Anne Arundel (27 percent); Carroll (32 percent); Calvert (30 percent). But Montgomery County reported higher participation than Prince George’s (21 percent) and Howard (24 percent).

Montgomery County’s participation rate is right on target with the state average for Maryland, which is also 25 percent, and MoCo easily bests the 16 percent national average.

Preppin’ for a Pop-In

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , at 12:14 pm by silversprung

A last-minute text message. A phantom doorbell ring. Even a head peeking out from behind the front door left ajar… It’s the pop-in!

You know — the “pop-in”: The last-minute visit during which the visitor sees the house, makes small talk, has one or two drinks, and promptly exits so you can get back to unpacking. The last week and a half of pop-ins have been some of the best surprises we’ve had since moving in.

Though a good pop-in guest never makes him or herself a burden, I’ve found it’s a pretty good idea to have some things on hand anyway to offer visitors. Read the rest of this entry »

Hit the Deck!

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , , , , , , at 2:35 pm by silversprung

A bed. A bed. We have a real bed! (Of course, they forgot to include the second split box spring with our order so we have no place yet for guests, but still…)

And the weather in the DC-area was just amazing this past weekend, wasn’t it?

That leads us to our next purchase….

Deck furniture was in our future, but silversprung spouse and I decided to up the timeline a little on account of the nice weather. Read the rest of this entry »

Kitty (Catty?) Corner

Posted in history, musings tagged , , , , , , at 10:11 am by silversprung

As we’re describing our new neighborhood to friends and family, we keep using versions of the phrase “kitty-corner.” Frankly, it sounds kind of wussy.

I decided to look up the etymology (because that’s how dorky I really am.) Read the rest of this entry »
