World Cup: Where to Go in The Spring

Posted in blogs, events, silver spring businesses tagged , , , , , at 3:03 pm by silversprung

I’m sure there must be hundreds of local lists detailing “Where to Watch the World Cup,” but Silver Spring Singular was kind enough to identify what will obviously be the best Silver Spring place to take in the action: McGinty’s.

On a side note, if you’re in the District, I know of some friends who are taking part in the public viewing that’s being set up in Dupont Circle.

Goldberg’s Answers My Bagel Prayers

Posted in blogs, food restaurants, recommendations, silver spring businesses tagged , , , , , , at 10:18 am by silversprung

As an original New York-area transplant, I’d long given up hope of finding a decent bagel in D.C. Sure, a few places in downtown D.C. carried H&H (Port of Piraeus, some place near 18th and Columbia that closed a few years ago, and I can’t remember where else) but those H&H’s were never fresh.

So I was delighted to read on Silver Spring, Singular that Goldberg’s Bagels was coming to The Spring! (Take that, Bagel Feud!)

One sesame with veggie cream cheese later and I’m hooked. Bethesda Bagels never did it for me (not dense enough) but this was the real deal. Can’t wait to try more.

Now if I could just find a decent diner nearby. Any suggestions?

Blah, Blah, Blog

As you’ve probably noticed, my blog volume has dropped considerably this week, and it’s all because of packing. We’re getting down to the wire — a mere three days and counting — until the big move. Besides finding out that nearly everything in our medicine cabinet had expired, it’s been pretty uneventful. But it’s been time-consuming nonetheless.

I wanted to take this opportunity to give some virtual shout-outs to the first few Silver Spring-related blogs I’ve discovered (or who discovered me.)

To Each His… Home

Posted in blogs, musings tagged , , at 10:13 am by silversprung

We saw it all while we were house hunting: painted wood floors, checkerboard wall accents, a refrigerator in every room.

Some houses stank of cigars, others of mildew and mold. One house had last been updated in 1950- including the electrical wiring and all appliances, including a push-button stove that was 7 feet long with two burners.

One house literally had a jersey wall to the beltway in the backyard. Before we visited that one, a realtor said it sounded like NASCAR when you went outside. He was right.

Of course if you have the vision (and the money) required to make immediate major changes to a new house, these things can be fixed right away. But for those of us without that, it was just plain entertaining.

I have no desire to “out” the less appealing houses of Silver Spring, but I did search the Internet for examples and found this site. Oh my. See crazy photos after the jump: Read the rest of this entry »
