Drink of the Day: 4 (Beat the Heat)

Posted in musings, recommendations, silver spring businesses tagged , , , , , , , at 11:09 am by silversprung

It’s going to be 101 degrees today in The Spring. (I’ll give you a minute to let that sink in.) I thought the jump in the temperature signals that it’s time for the latest installment of Drink of the Day.

Today’s drink was inspired by a recent trip to Jackie’s Sidebar where we were pleasantly surprised by the creative use of fresh herbs and infused liquors in their mixed drink offerings (more on Jackie’s Sidebar coming later this week.)

Ruby Red Rosemary Recipe:

4 oz pink grapefruit juice (fresh or bottled)

1.5 oz vodka

Sprig of rosemary

Instructions: Pour over ice in a highball glass, then mix using a sturdy sprig of rosemary. Let sit for 5 mins, stir again and serve. Leave the sprig in the glass as you sip for a truly aromatic experience. Optional: Infuse your vodka ahead of time with rosemary by heating up the herbs and letting them seep into the plain vodka. Another option: Add salt to the rim of your glass.

Drink of the Day: 3 (Drink Like You’re in the Islands, Mon)

St. JohnI haven’t posted a new drink recipe in a while, I know. So, inspired by a recent jaunt in the Caribbean, here’s a sampling of some of my favorites. Oh, and one non-alcoholic punch at the end for all you non-drinkers (and the rest of you can feel free to add some rum to that one.) Enjoy!

The Soggy Dollar Bar in St. John claims to have invented the following drink. Their recipe contains dark Rum, Cream of Coconut, Pineapple and Orange Juice, topped with fresh grated nutmeg. Of course, they keep their exact recipe a secret. Here’s a decent substitute: Read the rest of this entry »

Snack Attack!

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , , , , , , , , at 10:39 am by silversprung

I was talking with friends about the weird spontaneous snacks we favor in moments when there’s just enough time to snatch and grab. You know — the snack attacks that happen when you’re standing in the kitchen with the fridge open (a fingerful of peanut butter, a drink from the OJ carton and voila!)

Here’s a sampling of some tried and true rando-snacks from myself and friends:

  • Using pretzels to scoop cream cheese straight from the container
  • A single slice of lunchmeat and a single slice of cheese rolled together in a tube
  • Margarine spread on a tortilla
  • Cheese dipped in a salsa or tomato jar Read the rest of this entry »

Goldberg’s Answers My Bagel Prayers

Posted in blogs, food restaurants, recommendations, silver spring businesses tagged , , , , , , at 10:18 am by silversprung

As an original New York-area transplant, I’d long given up hope of finding a decent bagel in D.C. Sure, a few places in downtown D.C. carried H&H (Port of Piraeus, some place near 18th and Columbia that closed a few years ago, and I can’t remember where else) but those H&H’s were never fresh.

So I was delighted to read on Silver Spring, Singular that Goldberg’s Bagels was coming to The Spring! (Take that, Bagel Feud!)

One sesame with veggie cream cheese later and I’m hooked. Bethesda Bagels never did it for me (not dense enough) but this was the real deal. Can’t wait to try more.

Now if I could just find a decent diner nearby. Any suggestions?

Anniversary Dinner in Silver Spring?

Posted in food restaurants, recommendations, silver spring businesses tagged , , at 3:18 pm by silversprung

I’m counting on your help, sprungers! Silversprung spouse and I have an anniversary coming up. We had our hearts set on a place in D.C., but it’s been booked up for months and so far they haven’t had any cancellations.

What restaurants would you recommend in Silver Spring for an anniversary dinner? From cheap to chic and in-between. I want to hear it all!

Drink of the Day: 1

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , at 10:08 am by silversprung

After a hell of a day yesterday, I have decided to implement a new series on Sprung on the Spring called “Drink of the Day.”

Below is the first installment. Enjoy!

Cucumber Gin and Tonic

Don’t get grossed out by the cucumber just yet… First, picture a really warm day. D.C. humidity is ridiculously high. You’ve just nearly walked through water to get home, the air is so thick. You plunk down your work bag, grab a glass and some ice. Now… the Cucumber G&T.

Preppin’ for a Pop-In

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , at 12:14 pm by silversprung

A last-minute text message. A phantom doorbell ring. Even a head peeking out from behind the front door left ajar… It’s the pop-in!

You know — the “pop-in”: The last-minute visit during which the visitor sees the house, makes small talk, has one or two drinks, and promptly exits so you can get back to unpacking. The last week and a half of pop-ins have been some of the best surprises we’ve had since moving in.

Though a good pop-in guest never makes him or herself a burden, I’ve found it’s a pretty good idea to have some things on hand anyway to offer visitors. Read the rest of this entry »

Hit the Deck!

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , , , , , , at 2:35 pm by silversprung

A bed. A bed. We have a real bed! (Of course, they forgot to include the second split box spring with our order so we have no place yet for guests, but still…)

And the weather in the DC-area was just amazing this past weekend, wasn’t it?

That leads us to our next purchase….

Deck furniture was in our future, but silversprung spouse and I decided to up the timeline a little on account of the nice weather. Read the rest of this entry »

We’ll Just Split That, Thanks

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , , , , , , , , at 10:28 am by silversprung

Moving day was going smoothly. Silversprung spouse was at the store, I was directing the movers, and the rain had slowed to a steady drizzle.

I watched three movers shoulder our queen size mattress up the staircase, bending and folding the thing and cursing in Spanish. Then came the boxspring.

“It doesn’t fit.”

“This isn’t going up.” Read the rest of this entry »

First Night Essentials

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , at 10:32 am by silversprung

There’s no way we’ll be able to unpack and find everything we’ll need for our first night and morning in our new house Saturday, so I’ve decided to pack up a bag with all the essentials. Below is my list of everything I think we’ll need on the first night. Am I forgetting anything?

Pillows, mattress pad, sheets and blanket

Toilet paper

Toothbrush and toiletries

A shower curtain, liner, and curtain rings Read the rest of this entry »
