MD and VA vs. the Dreaded DC Cab Driver

Posted in musings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 9:57 am by silversprung

Granted, it was late at night, (okay, more like 2am) but that’s what happens when the D.C. fireworks start at 9:30pm, right? So picture this: silversprung spouse and I bid adieu to our 4th of July friends, who live off U Street in the District, and walked out to the corner to begin the cab hailing process.

There, we discovered roving bands of angry, tired, (and many intoxicated) people with arms outstretched competing for passing taxicabs. And we were only an army of two. Plus, we had to say the dreaded words that make D.C. cab drivers cringe in disgust: “Um, we’re going to Maryland.” Read the rest of this entry »

Something’s Awfully Fishy…

Posted in musings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 10:01 am by silversprung

We had a party the other weekend, and silversprung spouse grilled up two whole Rockfish for our guests. (We got the Rockfish from Ocean City Seafood, of course.)

The dinner was delicious and the fish was a hit. But that’s not where this story is going.

After all our guests left, silversprung spouse debated about what to do with the fish carcasses. “The trash doesn’t get picked up for another seven days,” SSspouse noted.

Well it was late at night, so SSspouse wrapped those babies in trash bags and put them in our outdoor garbage.

Two days later, the bugs began to descend. Read the rest of this entry »

Jackie’s Got a Brand New Chef

Posted in food restaurants, musings, silver spring businesses tagged , , , , , , , at 10:22 am by silversprung

We stopped by Jackie’s the other weekend and sampled food from their new chef, Diana Davila. Actually, we had no idea when we showed up that the chef and menu would be new, but our very very verbose waiter laid it all out for us.

She’s new to Jackie’s, but not to the restaurant world, having started cooking in her family’s restaurant in Chicago. Our server idolized the woman — he told us all about her history, her energy, drive, creativity, he even extolled her professionalism in the kitchen and her personality (yes, it was a very long “welcome to Jackie’s” speech.) It was a little weird, but we rolled with it. Read the rest of this entry »

First Night Out in The Spring

Posted in food restaurants, silver spring businesses tagged , , , , , , , , at 10:31 am by silversprung

This past weekend, we experienced something new. For the first time since our move, we had the time, the energy, and (most unusually) the very real desire to leave our new house for a break. So we ventured out for a quick dinner in downtown Silver Spring.

Silversprung spouse and I decided that we wanted Indian food, and since we still don’t yet have regular Internet or a phone book, we drove downtown in the hopes that we would spot some type of Indian cuisine. We came across Planet Bollywood, so we checked out the menu. SSspouse peered through the tinted glass to make certain people were eating there (my litmus test- I will never be the first table seated if we’re trying somewhere new) and we took a chance on it. Anniversary Dinner in Silver Spring?

Posted in food restaurants, recommendations, silver spring businesses tagged , , at 3:18 pm by silversprung

I’m counting on your help, sprungers! Silversprung spouse and I have an anniversary coming up. We had our hearts set on a place in D.C., but it’s been booked up for months and so far they haven’t had any cancellations.

What restaurants would you recommend in Silver Spring for an anniversary dinner? From cheap to chic and in-between. I want to hear it all!

Hit the Deck!

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , , , , , , at 2:35 pm by silversprung

A bed. A bed. We have a real bed! (Of course, they forgot to include the second split box spring with our order so we have no place yet for guests, but still…)

And the weather in the DC-area was just amazing this past weekend, wasn’t it?

That leads us to our next purchase….

Deck furniture was in our future, but silversprung spouse and I decided to up the timeline a little on account of the nice weather. Read the rest of this entry »

We’ll Just Split That, Thanks

Posted in musings, recommendations tagged , , , , , , , , , , at 10:28 am by silversprung

Moving day was going smoothly. Silversprung spouse was at the store, I was directing the movers, and the rain had slowed to a steady drizzle.

I watched three movers shoulder our queen size mattress up the staircase, bending and folding the thing and cursing in Spanish. Then came the boxspring.

“It doesn’t fit.”

“This isn’t going up.” Read the rest of this entry »

Commute This!

Posted in musings tagged , , , , , , , , , , at 10:23 am by silversprung

It’s been four days since we’ve moved to Silver Spring and the absence of an Internet connection is definitely impeding my ability to blog (okay, it’s completely destroying it.) But anyway, I think I’ll have that problem solved tonight so check back tomorrow for more frequent posting.

In the meantime, I wanted to bring up the subject of commuting. Between silversprung spouse and I, we’ve covered all the bases so far- Beltway during rush hour, Silver Spring Ride-On buses, metro from Silver Spring, metro at Takoma.

I’m used to underground metro-ing so it was nice to see that Silver Spring to downtown DC is above-ground. But I was struck by the fact that enormous, continuous graffiti lines the entire route. I know there are obviously more pressing things to crack down on, but still, that’s an entire seven miles of “JUJU” and “Freak” and a giant “Obama Hates Borf” at Takoma.  (Remember Borf?) One upside: I can glance up at the graffiti and know what stop we’ve reached.

Has the graffiti always been there or is it a recent development?

What’s your commute like in the area? Any tricks of the trade we should know?

That many? Hmm. Well…

Middle school too? Really?

Oh geez. Read the rest of this entry »

Adventures in Grilling with Silversprung Spouse

Posted in recommendations tagged , , , , , , , , , , at 10:14 am by silversprung

This weekend I posed to silversprung spouse what turned out to be a ridiculous question: Have you started researching the type of grill you want to buy for our new house?

As a basic griller myself, I’m fairly confident I can operate and cook on a variety of grills, but wouldn’t know where to start when buying one. So, I’ve decided to share silversprung spouse’s suggestions on purchasing a grill from the selection currently available in major department stores:

(Note: I couldn’t resist quoting some of this info directly) Read the rest of this entry »
